Who We Are

At CORDComply, our mission is simple. We exist to give the senior management of FCA regulated firms comfort that they are running a compliant business and can demonstrate control of the inherent risks posed by the operation.

We work with senior management to interoperate regulation proportionately and develop systems and controls that can demonstrate compliance fit for their business model, enabling firms to grow safely and profitably through targeted hands-on support or deliver a full risk and compliance outsourced service if desired.

Failure to comply with FCA principles and rules pose a material risk to the firm and its senior team. The onus is on the firm to demonstrate it takes reasonable steps to meet regulatory expectations and comply with rules through risk assessment, record keeping and how the firm strives to deliver good outcomes for customers evidenced by monitoring and board reporting.

CORDComply works with strategic partners, two of which are O2 Management Solutions Ltd and O’Connors, as well as various independent operations vital to running a compliant business. Stuart Smith

Stuart-SmithStuart has 40 years of experience in the financial services industry ranging from retail and investment banking, life and pensions, mortgage lending and general insurance including the Lloyd’s market.

After 14 years with Barclays bank where he achieved position of the UK regulated training director Stuart has spent the last 25 years working with companies as a consultant and in house. During this time he has worked with startups, been a director of an insurance group holding company, insurance company, an MGA, and his own firms including the UK’s first online IFA network and training consultancies.

His consultancy clients have included London market brokers, Investment banks and mortgage lenders with the last 10 years being engage mainly within the London market.

Stuart’s specialism is in ensuring firms have a clear view on governance especially risk management and compliance and in recent years has assisted a global insurance broker implement risk management processes to support SMCR implementation and a major UK insurer prepare for the Consumer Duty.

He prides himself on delivering proportionate and targeted solutions for firms that meet regulatory needs, drive commercial growth for firms and enabling senior managers to demonstrate control over the risks they are personably and collectively responsible for.

Stuart believes that CORDComply brings a much needed service to general insurance intermediaries by applying a tailored solution to good governance, operations and risk management rather than the 1 size fits all approach taken by many service providers in the market and is passionate about building a brand that delivers excellent outcomes for our clients and the customers of our clients.

Jonathan Sprules

Jonathon-SprulesJon Sprules is a board director of Independent Broking Solutions Limited, one of our strategic partners and a board member of CORDComply Ltd.

His experience includes oversight and implementation of regulatory changes including GDPR, IDD, SM&CR, Consumer Duty and the Appointed Representative Regime.

Jon also has extensive experience in the oversight and development of staff compliance training, Sanctions checking processes, TOBA oversight (issuance and amendment), contract review, the submission of regulatory returns and approval applications to governing bodies (FCA) including the creation of new regulated vehicles.

In 2020 he became a certified member of the International Compliance Association.

Nick Readings

Nick ReadingsNick Readings has been in the insurance industry for over 40 years in most roles encompassing specialist consulting, underwriting and latterly broking.

He qualified as a chartered accountant in a specialist West End accountancy practice and, after gathering other experience within the accounting profession, he joined a major Lloyd’s broker to manage their relationships and their business relating to Pool insurance companies. He has held a number of other insurance appointments including the Lloyd’s Market where roles included reserving and the development of in house systems capability, followed by consultancy work including a major part in the Equitas project.

Having been involved in discontinued portfolios since 1991, he continues to support this aspect of the business but is more recently focused on service support of both underwriters and brokers together with the introduction of new capital to the market. Whilst spending 20 years dealing with industry problems (run-off/closures) he now operates as CEO of Independent Broking Solutions Limited (IBS) a strategic partner to CORDComply. IBS is a commercial London based network for international insurance specialists. As well as IBS and other regulated entities, Nick sits on the Board of CORDComply adding his considerable knowledge and experience to the business.

Julia Kirkland, Associate Director, London

Julia

With an original background is in Asset Managements, Julia has twenty years of consulting at the highest level within regulated firms. Her work with insurance clients as led her to be conversant with regulatory requirements including Solvency II with project work on insurance thematic and other supervisory intervention including Consumer Duty and Product Governance obligations.

A Chartered Fellow CISI her knowledge of SMCR, associated regulatory governance requirements and activities is comprehensive. Julia has led workshops and attended roundtables with UK Finance, Investment Association and ABI on topics including Preparing for an FCA visit, Consumer Duty Assurance and Evidencing Reasonable Steps (as part of SMCR and SMF responsibilities).

Julia’s more recent direct work with clients has been focused on Executive and Board support. This work has included Board and Committee effectiveness reviews, preparing individuals and Exec teams for regulatory visits and facilitating strategy and governance workshops for full board teams. Her work also includes extensive work with NEDs as well as individual senior executives.

Josh Bates, O’Connors

Josh is the Legal Director of O’Connors and heads up the financial services and legal services regulatory team. He supports and advises clients and professional advisers on all aspects of financial regulation and legal regulation. In the insurance space, he advises insurers, reinsurers, MGA’s, appointed representatives, captives and alternative risk transfer vehicles in relation to regulatory, corporate and commercial issues. 

Josh is regularly instructed by other professional advisors to be part of their delivery team and provide regulatory due diligence, perimeter and compliance guidance, change in control advice, and transactional insurance support in M&A activity.
